This week is a trifecta of the advent of Spring, more daylight, and a tie between Formula One recommencing and St. Patrick's Day. It's a time of renewal. Revival.

It's also the anniversary of a sad passing in the central Virginia cosmos. Some years ago, Dave Grant, bass player and sound innovator left too soon, leaving behind a family, legions of musician/colleagues, Fellow DJs and bons vivants of all stripes... but not before exposing all of us to music from all corners of the globe (and especially Jamaican Rocksteady) and hand-molding it into seemingly impossible combinations with Old-Time and traditional east coast instrumentation and vehicles: taking music to a different-but-equal place. That's the responsibility of the creative mind... and that cat had it.

He's the rogue with the double bass at the front fender of the Checker Marathon wagon... a statement all by itself.

Cool Runnings

Twenty-two years ago, the Jamaican Bobsled team demonstrated their pluck, determination and spirit at the 1988 Calgary Olympics. Pantomimed in the Disney film, Cool Runnings (a sad swan song for comedian/actor John Candy), it was still a feat to be reckoned with: a tropical island nation, daring to field a team to represent them in an improbable winter event. But, nothing is achieved without outrageous effort in outrageous circumstances, is there?
