The Master Mixer Chants To The Foundation

(Goldfinger takes a break to pay the rent... the Master Mixer comes to represent)

Featured... the music of Dennis Emmanuel Brown, the late Crown Prince of Reggae.
The clip comes from Heartland Reggae. If you haven't seen it... you Must. Archival footage of a concert in MoBay (and the One Love Peace Concert, filmed just after the vicious assassination attempt on Bob Marley and band on Hope Road... and his bringing the warring political factions onstage to quell the violence).

Dennis Brown segues between "Whip Them Jah Jah" and "From The Foundation".
Check the crowd... they were having fun. Check the podcast, too.

A Tribute to Mrs. P... and Emmet Boaz

I had a conversation with my alternate, The MasterMixer, who lived in JA back in the day... about Sonia Pottinger. She ran a tight ship: not the ganja-smoking 'yard-style studio, very buttoned-down, dignified.
The polish and perfection of her productions are amongst the best of rock steady and reggae. She was a positive force to be reckoned with.

As you will hear.

This program is not only a tribute to her, but a fellow DJ who passed, unexpectedly, at the microphone last Saturday morning, Emmett Boaz. A true original, uncompromising, dedicated to radio and the music he presented. A huge loss to our programming, and our hearts.

Farewell To Mrs. P

Sonia Pottinger, the first woman record producer in Jamaican music history, and a pioneer of Rock Steady and early reggae music, passed on November 3, 2010.

The legacy of stars that passed through her dignified studios is a who's who of Jamaican music history.

Thank you, Mrs. P.

The Lunatics Have Taken Over The Asylum

Well... so much for keeping informed, and voting.

The USA is insane. One would think that admission to Congress would include a knowledge of the basics... and realizing that you represent everybody in your district, and not just your "base".

Ever the idealist, Your Selector.

Oh... and, Happy Guy Fawkes Day.

Wah Do Dem

A great little film created and starred by Sean Bones, indie rocker from NYC.

Stranded in JA on a misbegotten cruise, he encounters Buru Banton, Cedric Myton and the Congos... and the ever-present main man of Jamaican film, Carl Bradshaw. Norah Jones is in there, too.

It's free, only for a week.

Tek some time... It'll take you there:

Soon Forward... Gregory Isaacs to Zion

Gregory Anthony Isaacs is gone, passing at the age of 59 at his home in London. Another tragedy for the reggae world, following Ari Up of the Slits and Sugar Minott, in close succession. In decline for some years, He stands as one of the great singers in Jamaican music history.

They didn't call him "Cool Ruler" for nothing.

The MasterMixer... pre-Jazz Marathon

It was homegrown roots, today... Jamaica-born Robert took the controls, with lots of Slim Smith... and took it home with Alpha Blondy.

Next week, "Reggae Vibrations" is pre-empted for our Jazz marathon fund-raiser.

Give them some love.

Katrina, Remembered... 5th Anniversary

Five years after the substandard levees broke... and it's still an unresolved disaster for many people who called it home. The opportunistic cockroaches who call themselves "politicians" and "public defenders" and "developers" are still scurrying when the light is shone on them... all after Bush 43 said that everything would be done to make the city whole again. Not on his watch, surely... and not even now.

We again recognize the influence and "necessity" of the city of New Orleans (and Lake Charles, victim to Hurricane Rita, weeks later)... to American and Jamaican life, music and culture, as well.

Live And Direct

OK... so I've had to work on Fridays to make rent for the past two weeks. Thank You, Congress. Thank You, too, corporate assholes, for putting me in this position.

However, I'll be making up for it on this Friday evening, opening up the festivities at the Twisted Branch Tea Bazaar in Charlottesville, gladly adopted by The Grits-N-Gravy Soul and Funk Revue.
About 45 minutes of ska, rocksteady, and whatever I find in my baggatrix. Be There.

Also... there's a new bit of progress at WTJU: finally, all of our programming is available for streaming, for two weeks after the show dates. Whatever your passion, whenever you want, wherever you are.

The Tape Vault!

I've probably said it, many times before: I love this radio station. It has something for everyone... and everything for someone. Now it's available, 24/7, globally.

Rest In Peace, Lincoln "Sugar" Minott

From Reggae United (online) Magazine:

"The rumour has been circulating on the internet for a few hours, but now it looks like Sugar Minott's death has been confirmed. The Jamaican singer had been suffering from heart disease for quite some time.

Sugar Minott had a great career that began with the group African Brothers then solo recording his first album for Coxsone Dodd at Studio One. He also played a big role in the career of artists such as Junior Reid, Tristan Palmer, Tony Tuff, Yami Bolo, Garnett Silk and many more with his musical school Youth Promotion. RIP."

Rest assured, his gifts will be acknowledged on this week's Reggae Vibrations.

In the meantime, enjoy the vibe he left us:

T'ings 'A come Up To Bump

It's crunch time for community-based/college radio. Either we continue to broadcast the best that we know how, combining an obssessive love for music with the enthusiasm of our listeners... or disappear into the homogenized heap.

Music is information. Entertainment. New horizons. A new favorite song that you didn't know you couldn't live without. Support us at our Town Meeting, or Voice Your Choice, online.
Music can still make a difference. It's got the world by the short and curlies.

A Change Is Gonna Come

It is said that "all politics are local". Certainly, in these past few weeks it has clearly been so.
The administration that controls WTJU at the University of Virginia, as part of its fiscal concerns, has sought to redefine the nature of this so-called "freeform" radio station, and implement changes to see more "Return On Investment".
True, our attempts at self-funding through our marathon pledge drives has gotten tighter as the financial wreckage continues in the US. The "bottomline" rules everything.

But, instead of dissolving the station as was considered, we have until August to take our best shot at keeping our mission of providing msuic and information that can't be found elsewhere on the radio dial--not only in Charlottesville, VA, but nationwide as well. Our first real attempts at promotion have to bear fruit, or the writing is on the wall: DJ-powered, non-commercial radio is in the balance.

You can travel from shore-to-shore listening to the radio, and hear nothing but uniformity... no identity to inform you where you might be. That's something we have always risen above at WTJU. But it may not be enough.

Support and contribute to sounds and information that you can't hear, anywhere else... either with us, or that "special" radio station in your own area that not only entertains, but educates.

And might, just possibly, be one song away from presenting you with your newest, favorite, never-heard-before music.

Jimmy Cliff/Iron Lion @ Charlottesville Pavilion, 27 June (review)

Painfully close to 96 degrees in the shade, the oppressive heat didn't deter a healthy crowd to descend on Charlottesville's downtown Pavilion to witness a sublime evening of resonant reggae music on Sunday (27th).

Iron Lion opened the festivities (featuring longtime Harrisonburg roots-reggae rockers from Stable Roots, Chris "Peanut" Whitley and Greg Ward) with a bass-heavy thump of classics and originals... and two guests that brought the sound home, in more ways than one: Ras Mel on guitar and vocals, original member of Awareness Art Ensemble (whose reunion had just taken place in Richmond, the previous evening) and the sweet harmonies of Davina Jackson, (twin sister Davita, a vocal phenomenon in her own right, in support in the crowd). As the shadows gathered, the drums ignited.

Many local lovers of reggae had their appreciation begun by the seminal 1972 film, The Harder They Come, starring the evening's headliner, Jimmy Cliff. Amazingly, thirty-eight years hence, Mr. Cliff's vocal range delivered the favorites from that soundtrack in note-perfect tribute as he stridently commanded the stage with his crucial band of musicians. A wry update of his classic "Vietnam" morphed into "Afghanistan"... the force of years and change of venue, seamless in song and events. Dancefloor, sweaty and packed.

To my ears, though, the crescendo of the evening occurred when the musicians laid aside the electrified instruments and gathered at stage center to engage in traditional Nyabinghi drumming and chanting to personal favorite, "Bongo Man".

The booming syncopation and intricate harmonies of an ancient musical form echoed down those commercial streets across from the Pavilion in a call-and-response that reminded me that those doors were firmly closed... but Jimmy Cliff's grasp of the roots were wide open.

Lightning Flash, Weak Heart Drop

No... we haven't been silenced. Our license hasn't been yanked. There's not a mass "sit-in" at the station, with hostages.

The Powers-that-be did what committees haven't done: an apocalyptic storm strewing trees across power lines all across CVille... ironically, right about the time there was a meeting to "begin" to figure the whole mess out.

Word has it that WTJU will be back up, sooner rather than later. I'm sitting by the phone to make a mad dash, right now.

Weekend Events, 26th-27th

A reminder that Jimmy Cliff hits the stage of the Charlottesville Pavilion (providing, of course, that there is electricity after Thursday night's apocalyptic storm) on Sunday 27th... with Iron Lion opening, instead of Soldiers of Jah Army. Showtime, 7PM. He got good press for his Bonnaroo performance (way down the page for the Saturday review)....

Bedrock of Old Dominion reggae, Awareness Art Ensemble, reunites to perform at the Richmond's the National on Saturday.

And, the 18th Annual DC Carribean Festival commences with their parade, Saturday. If you were spellbound by the story of the Mardi Gras Indians on HBO's Treme... you can see where the tradition began. On the street:

PARADE: Saturday, June 26, 2010, 11 a.m.
FESTIVAL: Saturday and Sunday, June 26 - 27, 2010, 12-7 p.m.
DC Caribbean Carnival Parade Route: Along Georgia Avenue from Missouri Avenue to Barry Place.
DC Caribbean Carnival Festival Location: Banneker Recreation Park, Georgia Avenue at Barry Place, directly across from Howard University in NW Washington, DC. (202) 726-2204.

Hysteria

Much has been said in local news these past few days, regarding the fate of WTJU.

Hasty, incomplete edicts were handed down, earlier this week, eliminating much programming... though the Reggae Vibrations was to have survived, albeit on Tuesday nights, 8-10PM. During this evening's meeting of DJs, and also a surprise visit of the new General Manager, from whence these proposed changes came, it was revealed that a "moratorium" on change will be in effect for two months, though it seems clear that the University (of Virginia) wants to see a serious return on its investment... and that change will come.

Through all of this, the single most galling fact is that the listeners were completely ignored with regard to those changes. When I began as DJ for "Reggae Vibes", it was already into its twenty-third year of an ongoing thirty-one year run--on Friday afternoon, where it has always been.

More than once, those that appreciate the program have always told me that the show defines Friday afternoons in Charlottesville.

The listener's voices need to be heard. That's how this show, and this radio station, has earned its longevity, to begin with. If you are engaged in Reggae Vibrations, call the station (during regular business hours, 9AM-5PM) at (434) 924-0885, and ask for GM Burr Beard, email him at bb3vx@eservices.virginia.edu , or write WTJU Radio, PO Box 400811, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA 22904-4811.

The consensus is that our dwindling revenue during pledge drives means that nobody is listening, and that change is necessary for the University to get more bang for its buck.

It's your turn. Let them know what you think... and what you believe in.

Jimmy Cliff @ Charlottesville Pavilion

Following reports of his performance at Bonnaroo, Jimmy Cliff has been rescheduled to appear in Charlottesville Pavilion on Sunday, June 27th, with northern VA's Soldiers Of Jah Army (righteous domestic roots-rockers).

"Many Rivers To Cross", indeed.

As mankind finds further ways to diminish itself and it's environment, Praises for the simplicity of soccer/football to find a way for people from all corners of the globe to cooperate, even if only for two weeks.

Not so very long ago, the idea of the World Cup in apartheid South Africa would have been a pipe dream.

In a long-ago interview with Ansel Cridland of the Meditations, we agreed that openness to the common joys of food, music and football were things that demystified all cultures.

Jimmy Cliff-POSTPONED/Awareness Art Ensemble Reunion in Richmond

Originally slated to perform, tonight, at the Charlottesville Pavilion (with openers, Soldiers Of Jah Army), travel issues have caused the show to be postponed, until further notice.

However...

...the venerable Virginia roots collective, Awareness Art Ensemble, will be performing a reunion concert at The National (708 East Broad Street, Richmond) on Saturday, June 26th. The pioneers of reggae music in this area (having often uplifted many an audience in Charlottesville), they are billed as bringing together all surviving members and two "special guests" in a much-anticipated EVENT. The WTJU studios have one, lone 45 single of their "Coming Home" that has been dusted off many times in the more than twenty years that its been in the library.

Give Thanks, AAE.
